About Us

The Tebhaga Movement is probably the greatest peasants’ movement in the history of India. This movement was a movement of the sharecroppers of Bengal demanding two-third share instead of half as their produced crops. Basically from the principle demand, the name ‘Tebhaga Movement’ came. This movement started at Ramchandrapur under Thakurgoan sub-division during a crucial time of the year 1946 on November when Amon paddy is harvested. Our Tebhaga Teachers’ Training College is situated at village Margram which is 7 km away from Ramchandrapur. At the beginning of this movement the small peasants joined hands with sharecroppers as the gambit of the demands increased, later women, students, workers and middle-class people participated in Tebhaga movement. As reported 60 lakh people participated in Tebhaga movement at its peak.

The movement spread out in 13 districts of undivided Bengal. 3119 peasants were arrested and 70 peasants died of police firing. Dinajpur, Rangpur, Jalpaiguri district were the main epicenter of the Tebhaga Movement.

For remembering those peasants who sacrificed their lives in Tebhaga Movement and the place Ramchandrapur where the Tebhaga Movement was held first in Bengal,we decided at the trust meeting that the name of proposed Teachers’ Training college would be Tebhaga Teachers’ Training College.
